2.1 Earths Crust in Motion

Vocabulary

earthquake - shaking/trembling from a rock beneath Earth's surface
stress - force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume
shearing - stress that pushes rock in two opposite directions
tension - stress force that pulls on crust
compression - squeezes rock until it folds/breaks
deformation - any change in volume/shape of earth's crust
fault - break in earth's crust where slabs of crust slip past each other
strike-slip fault - rocks on both sides of faults slip sideways past each other with some up/ down motion
reverse fault - opposite of normal fault
normal fault - one block of rock above fault, the other below
fault block mountains - normal fault rocks
folds - bends in rock
anticline - fold in rock that bends upwards
syncline - fold in rock that bends downwards
plateaus - flat, elevated land
